Pokemon Unite and Wild Rift win mobile games of the year

Pokemon Unite and League of Legends: Wild Rift were two of this year’s biggest mobile releases and both were honored to receive the Mobile Game of the Year award. Pokemon Unite has been dubbed the best Google Play game of 2021, while League of Legends: Wild Rift won Apple’s iPhone game of the year. Funny enough, both games are MOBAs.

Pokemon Unite released last summer and gave Pokemon fans a unique take on the franchise. The game doesn’t try to overdo it with the genre, but puts its own mark on things with its large roster of playable Pokémon. Let’s be honest, a MOBA is as much fun as champions and characters, and Pokemon Unite has a list of beloved Pokemon to choose from.

In our review of the game, which we actually played on Nintendo Switch, we felt Pokemon Unite was a perfect introduction to MOBAs. Easy-to-understand mechanics, a familiar character roster, cute visuals, and fun unlockables – it’s easy to see why Pokemon Unite was chosen as the best game from Google Play in 2021.

League of Legends: Wild Rift, meanwhile, is a mobile version of Riot Games’ PC MOBA, League of Legends. It might not seem like much, but in reality Riot had to do a ton of work to get League PC’s intricate mechanics to work properly on mobile devices. And honestly, they hit a home run.

League of Legends: Wild Rift features the same competitive team action as its PC counterpart. Despite the touchscreen controls, there is still a ton of top-level competition. I was worried that PC controls wouldn’t translate to mobile, but Riot did a terrific job reworking their champions so they still feel the same in mind but streamlined for mobile matches. I enjoyed Wild Rift on PC so much that it’s not my favorite version to play.
