Airtel Mobile Commerce Uganda Limited (AMCUL), the digital payments and mobile financial solutions company spun off from Airtel Uganda, on Tuesday appointed Hon. Maria Kiwanuka as Board Chair.
Kiwanuka served as finance minister from 2011 to 2015, then senior presidential adviser on financial matters.
In addition, she has more than 15 years of professional experience at the World Bank as an economist and financial analyst in different countries around the world. She also worked at the Global Green Growth Institute.
His appointment was announced by Airtel Money Africa Group CEO, Mr. Vimal Ambat, as part of changes which also saw AMCUL CEO, Mr. Aritho Kinyua Japheth and Big Drum Advisory Services Team Leader , John Muhaise Bikalemesa, to join the AMCUL Board of Directors.

“His skills and abilities will be important as we guide AMCUL through its next phase of growth and our goal of deepening financial inclusion in the country. We are confident that his skills, along with those of the other members, will enrich the Board of administration of AMCUL as it effectively defines and implements the direction and strategy of the organization.”
For her part, Hon. Kiwanuka said she was “humbled by the trust AMCUL shareholders have shown in me and the responsibility they have placed in me.”
“I wish to assure our stakeholders that I will offer my best abilities to lead the transformation of this business to deliver value to shareholders and to Uganda, our beloved country.”
AMCUL CEO, Mr. Aritho, who is also joining the Board, previously served as Senior Vice President – Operations, Distribution and Controls at Airtel Money Africa. Mr. Muhaise has previous board experience, having served at Standard Chartered Bank, Multi-Konsults Limited, Ugachick Uganda Limuted and Bestin Limited.
Appointments take effect immediately.
