Amazon will shut down its GameOn mobile game capture app after less than two years in service.
First launched in 2020, GameOn allowed users to share mobile game clips up to five minutes long, as well as participate in challenges and connect with other mobile gamers.
After initially launching on Google Play and the Amazon Appstore for Android devices, GameOn later came to the App Store for iOS devices. According to data.ai, the GameOn app hasn’t received any updates since September 2021.
GameOn will be taken offline on June 18, 2022 and all content will be removed from the platform. However, users can still download their downloaded content before the app was removed.
GameOn is gone
The service’s shutdown is likely the result of low user numbers, with many turning to other established video-sharing apps, such as TikTok, to share clips of mobile games.
Despite shutting down the app, Amazon isn’t stepping away from mobile gaming. The company recently bolstered its mobile gaming offerings with the launch of the Luna cloud gaming subscription in the US to deliver console-quality gaming on iOS and Android.
The company also recently appointed former World of Warcraft developer Kurt Sparkuhl as lead mobile game designer to work on an unannounced mobile game.
